A dramatic increase in the high-speed properties of vertical cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) can be achieved by a simple reduction in the photon lifetime of the cavity, according to research-ers in Sweden. The team at Chalmers University of Technology have investigated this effect and have used it to increase the modulation bandwidth of an 850 nm multimode VCSEL by over 50% to a record high of 23 GHz, beating the previous record of 21.5 GHz set by K. L. Lear et al. in 1997.
