Error-free dense wavelength division multiplexed (DWDM) transmission of 43 Gbit/s DPSK signals transmitted and detected by a commercial transponder is demonstrated over 1200 km of NZ-DSF with 50 GHz channel spacing and no inline dispersion compensation. Custom slope-matched dispersion compensation modules provide terminal-only compensation, facilitating a simple system configuration with performance >3 dB above the forward error correction threshold.

Inspec keywords: forward error correction; differential phase shift keying; wavelength division multiplexing; transponders

Other keywords: differential phase shift keying; commercial transponder; inline dispersion compensation; NZ-DSF; slope-matched dispersion compensation modules; terminal-only compensation; DPSK transmission; DWDM; distance 1200 km; frequency 50 GHz; bit rate 43 Gbit/s; dense wavelength division multiplexing; forward error correction

Subjects: Radio links and equipment; Multiplexing and switching in optical communication; Codes
