A 4.6 W erbium-doped fluoride fibre laser that operates simultaneously at 2.83 and 1.61 µm is demonstrated. By allowing the 1.5 µm transition to reach threshold, bottlenecking is prevented by radiative decay; a process that will allow further power scaling of the transitions.
