This paper presents a comparison between micro drives and flash drives as rival memory solutions for mobile handsets. When evaluating the pros and cons of flash drives versus micro drives for the mobile handset market, engineers must bear in mind that a handset, even if it is music-centric, is first and foremost a mobile phone. It must fit into the user's pocket, be rugged enough to withstand drops and falls, operate in extreme weather conditions, and are available at a reasonable price. Engineers, therefore, should consider critical factors such as the size, power consumption, reliability and cost per megabyte of the memory solution they choose, which are discussed in this paper.
