Still in the research stage, ultra wide band (UWB) is promising a wireless revolution. UWB wireless has received increasing interest as a means of transmitting data at a rate in excess of that required for video, and over an ad-hoc network that does not utilise a fixed access point as required by wireless LANs. UWB is a wireless transmission technology that differs fundamentally from all other wireless transmission schemes since it does not employ a carrier. Instead, specially shaped base-band pulses with duration of less than ins are transmitted. A UWB transmission standard that is currently under consideration by IEEE 802.15 and ETSI committees.
