IET Conference & Seminar Publications

The IET organises a range of international conferences, seminars and exhibitions each year. The conferences cover all aspects of electrical, electronic, manufacturing and systems engineering, and related sciences. Seminar publications and digests are collections of condensed information relating to presentations at IET colloquia and seminar events, and are sometimes in the form of speakers' hand-outs or copies of the slide show presentation. Proceedings from the conferences are published after each event.

      • The Sea connects us all. The 7th Offshore Energy & Storage Symposium was held on the Mediterranean island of Malta, between 12 - 14 July 2023. From its instigation in 2014 the "Offshore Energy and Storage" (OSES) conference series has always been about understanding and minimising the total cost of renewable energy from offshore environments whilst also attending to the sustainability of the solutions presented. OSES 2023 will take place in a world that has seen very clearly just how volatile energy costs can become if the heavy reliance on fossil fuels remains and just how important energy independence is for the integrity of every country. Offshore energy can no longer be simply a general direction of travel without any firm timescale.       • One challenge of island grids and micro-grids is to maintain the balance between production and consumption. Diesel generators are still frequently used for this task. Due to the unavoidable dependence on fuel price and delivery options, and the environmental impact, alternatives are being sought. Wind and solar power are independent of imported fuels and environmentally friendly, and therefore the logical choice for island and micro-grids. However, these renewable energies are dependent on variable resource availability; hence their maximum production capacity is subject to natural fluctuations. It is therefore important to develop strategies for how to align production and consumption in the best possible way and to find the perfect combination of conventional and renewable energy. The Faroe Islands are located in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean, halfway between Norway and Iceland, north of Scotland. The archipelago consists of 18 islands with 54,000 inhabitants in total, and it is electrically isolated from other countries. This made the Faroes a fascinating location for the 7th International Hybrid Power Plants & Systems Workshop. The Workshop offered a prime opportunity to discuss the future of hybrid power systems. Participants had the chance to look at applications in a variety of locations and operating environments with a focus on system design, operating experience, business models, economics, and implementation issues.

      • ADCOM 2022 explores the current state-of-art in embedded artificial intelligence. Embedded AI involves programming edge nodes with AI models developed using machine learning algorithms trained on very large datasets. This allows edge nodes to make high probability decisions about processing information efficiently and autonomously. The AI module on these devices processes large amounts of data collected from the sensors and perform on-device processing of datasets to make real-time decisions without the need for any external guidance in most cases. With embedded AI in edge computing, the need to transfer raw data from a device is obviated and processing times are reduced. The availability of processing at the edge allows us to increase the scale of operations vastly in domains like automation, transportation, healthcare and so on. Depending on the size of the dataset, it is possible to adapt machine learning algorithms for specific domains or applications. Embedded AI offers a more focused approach than traditional Machine Learning in embedded computing that requires extensive datasets for training and model verification.

The objective of the conference was to provide an excellent and interactive communication forum for professional engineers and academics to exchange ideas and to share experiences and innovations on the latest technological developments in power systems, building electrical services and energy utilization. The conference was attended by over 200 delegates and guests joined in-person/online from over 12 countries with more than 100 papers presented throughout the two and half day sessions. There were four keynote sessions presented by local / overseas speakers on Day 1 and Day 2. On the other hand, 8 parallel sessions and 6 special sessions which covered technical topics around management and planning, operations and controls, artificial intelligence, end use management, smart grid technology as well as electric power market. The conference was well received by the participants with a lot of interactive discussions, idea exchanges and knowledge sharing amongst speakers and participants.
