IET Conference & Seminar Publications

The IET organises a range of international conferences, seminars and exhibitions each year. The conferences cover all aspects of electrical, electronic, manufacturing and systems engineering, and related sciences. Seminar publications and digests are collections of condensed information relating to presentations at IET colloquia and seminar events, and are sometimes in the form of speakers' hand-outs or copies of the slide show presentation. Proceedings from the conferences are published after each event.

  • 17th Asian Congress of Fluid Mechanics (ACFM 2023)

      • The 17th Asian Congress of Fluid Mechanics (ACFM), hosted by Asian Fluid Mechanics Committee, is organized by Beijing Institute of Technology and Fluid Mechanics Committee of the Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics. The 17th ACFM is held on August 8-12, 2023 in Beijing, China. The congress has attracted over four hundred participants covering the most countries and regions in Asia, as well as the countries in other continents such as United States, Russia and Sweden. A total of over 360 abstracts and 70 full papers were submitted for this event. The congress covers major branches of fluid mechanics, including boundary layer theory, computational fluid dynamics, compressible flows and aerodynamics, combustion, and several other relevant subjects. Twelve renowned scholars, including Shiyi Chen, S. Mittal, H. Y. Kim, H. Tanaka, A. J. Giacomin, and so on, have been invited to deliver Plenary Lectures at the congress. There are 36 parallel sessions, and nearly 300 experts, scholars, and graduate students gave the oral presentations during the conference. The 17th ACFM is the third time that this series of conferences has been hosted in the Chinese mainland. The participating countries and the number of participants in the 17th ACFM are the largest ever since, which would significantly enhance the visibility of the AFMC at home and abroad, strengthen exchanges and cooperation between Asian countries and Europe and north America, and promote the development of fluid mechanics in Asia.

      • One challenge of island grids and micro-grids is to maintain the balance between production and consumption. Diesel generators are still frequently used for this task. Due to the unavoidable dependence on fuel price and delivery options, and the environmental impact, alternatives are being sought. Wind and solar power are independent of imported fuels and environmentally friendly, and therefore the logical choice for island and micro-grids. However, these renewable energies are dependent on variable resource availability; hence their maximum production capacity is subject to natural fluctuations. It is therefore important to develop strategies for how to align production and consumption in the best possible way and to find the perfect combination of conventional and renewable energy. The Faroe Islands are located in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean, halfway between Norway and Iceland, north of Scotland. The archipelago consists of 18 islands with 54,000 inhabitants in total, and it is electrically isolated from other countries. This made the Faroes a fascinating location for the 7th International Hybrid Power Plants & Systems Workshop. The Workshop offered a prime opportunity to discuss the future of hybrid power systems. Participants had the chance to look at applications in a variety of locations and operating environments with a focus on system design, operating experience, business models, economics, and implementation issues.

      • ADCOM 2022 explores the current state-of-art in embedded artificial intelligence. Embedded AI involves programming edge nodes with AI models developed using machine learning algorithms trained on very large datasets. This allows edge nodes to make high probability decisions about processing information efficiently and autonomously. The AI module on these devices processes large amounts of data collected from the sensors and perform on-device processing of datasets to make real-time decisions without the need for any external guidance in most cases. With embedded AI in edge computing, the need to transfer raw data from a device is obviated and processing times are reduced. The availability of processing at the edge allows us to increase the scale of operations vastly in domains like automation, transportation, healthcare and so on. Depending on the size of the dataset, it is possible to adapt machine learning algorithms for specific domains or applications. Embedded AI offers a more focused approach than traditional Machine Learning in embedded computing that requires extensive datasets for training and model verification.
