Statcom compensation is increasingly being employed to compensate reactive power, mainly as a result of technological development of processor-controlled power electronics. It is within this trend that the present paper engages in the experimental analysis of this concept starting from basic circuitry up to practiced applications. Main objective of the analysis herein is the construction of a pilot model consisting of discrete electronic components simulating the grid via a source, a transmission line and a load, the later causing a phase difference between the source voltage and the load current. A DC source inverted to an AC voltage aimed at injecting a current into the system when connected to the load end of the grid is destined to compensate the existing reactive load current. Experimental measurements are found to agree significantly with theoretical calculations, suggesting that the pilot model may simulate further realistic power system scenarios.
