Home automation is an important aspect as regards control of appliances in modern smart homes. This paper proposes an economic methodology for better monitoring and control of domestic loads using Internet of Things (IoT). The system is used to monitor and control home appliances such as lights, fans, chargers, fridge, etc., using cheap IoT supported Node MCU board and an android based smartphone. Faults in devices can also be identified using the current signatures. A photovoltaic (PV) module powered IoT application is implemented for powering the control equipment and driving different domestic loads when needed. The system is affordable as well as easily implementable. Experimental laboratory setup with obtained results validates the proposed concept.
