This paper investigates the effect of ageing, due to electrical stress, on the frequency spectrum of partial discharges. The type of test object used is a twisted pair of enamelled wire and is used for the entire investigation. The results showed that a recurring pattern, which is time related, has been observed on a large majority of the tested objects. This pattern is related to ageing and therefore was used to assess other parameters like the influence of the frequency range investigated and the influence of the sensor types on the ageing process recognition. The analysis showed that no specific criteria in the investigated frequency spectrum enable a direct identification of the ageing process.
