To enable the full range of “smart” grid functionality at all levels of the distribution and transmission network it is necessary to have a widespread roll out of measurement of loading. At present, traditional devices are too expensive to install across all 11kV/400V substations. This paper details an approach using the sensors in a typical android mobile phone to detect and measure load current at a cost significantly lower than traditional measurements. The paper covers the theory behind how such an implementation could be undertaken and presents results based on testing in a substation on single phase and three phase cable. The data is manipulated on the phone and then uploaded to a server. Results are encouraging but significant follow on work is needed.
