This paper focuses on the rapid development of the Internet of Things IoT, and especially on its application at homes to create what is referred to as smart homes. The research explores the perception of Bahrain nationals of smart homes and how they interact with the products associated with the internet and their willingness to introduce these products to their homes. The research started with a pilot survey examining the main reasons for turning regular homes into smart homes. Among the most often mentioned ones were security, control and ease of living. The research also highlights the challenges faced by people in Bahrain when it comes to fully or partially transfering their dwellings into a smart home. Finally, it lists the aspects that providers of smart home technologies (SHTs) have to consider for the owners to be comfortable to fully transfer their homes into smart homes.
