Smart cities are becoming more popular with the increasing demand for applying the Internet of Things (IoT) technology. The objective of smart cities is to increase the use of resources efficiently and to preserve data security, integrity, and controlling network infrastructure management. IoT concept can solve many problems related to smart cities, and car parking is one of these problems as with the increase in vehicles' numbers and traffic congestion, the need for a smart parking system has been raised. The parking system will not solve only the driver's problem looking for an available parking space but also will enhance the parking monitoring and management problem. In this research, a detailed and comprehensive literature survey of the previous studies and project implementations will be reviewed to explore the best practices done and to find the gaps in previous studies. Implementation and development of a smart parking system based on IoT technology have been proposed using the simulation method. The system will monitor the parking spaces and enable the drivers to check the available parking slots and reserve it for a specific time. The reservation of the parking slot can save the drivers' time and reduce the consumption of fuel, and this will even lead to the reduction of the emission of Carbon Monoxide (CO) gas to the air by the vehicles.
