Storing data in a secure form of DNA bases has attracted researchers’ attention for many years due to its enormous capability to store huge amount of data in very tiny parts of DNA. DNA cryptography is one of the latest technological advances in securing data storage and transmission based on the concept of utilizing DNA as a medium to encrypt, store and transmit data in a secured manner. Many algorithms have been introduced in literature combining biological operations with other computational techniques to introduce new cryptosystems. In this paper, we review the state-of-the-art of published work and research directions in this area. Moreover, we propose and evaluate a new DNA-based symmetric cryptosystem, known as quad-fid scheme.
