This paper discusses a retrofit for Bahrain Traffic Light Control (TLC) Systems by modifying and accelerating the current TLC systems using Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). Using FPGAs in TLC System offering a bundle of advantages that can’t be found in other hardware, like the capability of upgrading and improving the TLC with zero cost. Also, they are cost-effective as they cost less than some hardware like Application-Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs). Moreover, they offer more flexibility and faster than microcontrollers. This paper discusses a technique of retrofitting Bahrain TLC System with FPGAs to prepare Bahrain cities to be ready in the future for smart city applications.
