GIS equipment plays an important role in power transmission and transformation systems. The reliability of power supply will be seriously affected once a fault occurs. It is impossible to monitor the temperature rise of the central conductor for the GIS equipment in operation. But a significant abnormal temperature rise on GIS shell will be caused by the overheating contact points inside, which can reflect the severity of the internal defects indirectly. This paper builds a test platform based on an 110kV branch bus GIS disconnector gas chamber. The temperature rise regular pattern of GIS was obtained through the temperature rise test. Then a thermal-flow field coupled finite element simulation model was established. By simulating the processes of heating, transferring and dissipation in GIS accurately, the error between the results of simulation and test was limited in 0.85K, which verified the accuracy of the model. The temperature of the central conductor can be deduced from the temperature of the shell through the model. Then the severity of the defect can be determined, and the operating status can be assessed.
