April 2016, One AC filter of a HVDC converter station occurred optical CT breakage alarm signal. The optical CT composite insulator is inspected, cracks at the first and second umbrella skirt on the high voltage end is found. Also, the optical cable that transmits optical signals is damaged. Finite Element Method (FEM) simulation software was used to calculate the surface electric field of insulators by simulation, the possibility of aging and destruction of organic insulating materials caused by high filed strength creeping discharge is eliminated. Then, the cause of the damage from production process and other aspects is analysis. Some feasible suggestion is proposed based on the research results.
