In recent years, there have been many failures of metallic return transfer breaker due to the damage of arrester in parallel. In the process of switching operation in converter station, the mutil-colum arrester needs to absorb huge energy in a short time during switching. However, the energy absorption by zinc oxide varistors is unbalanced. Considering the influence of long-term operation and environmental factors, the reduction of volt-ampere characteristics of some varistors absorb more energy than others. When the absorbed energy exceeds its thermal capacity, the breakdown fault will occur. In order to solve the problem of arrester failure, the concept of fuse protected arrester is adopted in this paper, parameter requirements of MRTB arrester through theoretical calculation and simulation study are put forward, and the new structure of multi-column arrester in this station is proposed.
