Surge propagation on transmission tower is a concerning issue in lightning protection, particularly in predicting overvoltage on electrical power system as well as providing reference information for surge protection design. Transmission towers have been modelled, previously, based on analytical electromagnetic analysis and measured lightning surge experiments, while the tower grounding device is considered as a lumped resistance conventionally. As a matter of fact, surge response of tower grounding device is of great importance in determination of surge propagation along transmission lines and towers. This paper proposes a transmission tower model considering surge propagation of tower grounding device by applying Vector Fitting method, and the proposed model provides consistent results as electromagnetic simulation.
