The fault transient of multi-terminal HVDC power grid develops very fast, so it is necessary to configure current limiting reactor to restrain the rise of fault current in practical engineering. However, the configurations of current-limiting reactor will not only limit the fault current, but also affect the non-fault part. Therefore, the configurations of current-limiting reactor in multi-terminal HVDC transmission system are studied in this paper. Firstly, this paper establishes the fault calculation model of multi-terminal HVDC transmission system, and gives the calculation method of system state variables including the active stage of circuit breakers. Then, this paper analyses the problems that need to be considered in the configuration of current-limiting reactor of multi-terminal HVDC transmission system. Finally, this paper takes four-terminal HVDC transmission system as an example, aiming at different configurations of the current-limiting reactor. The faulty process of the current system is simulated and the influence of the current-limiting reactor on the maximum fault current, the blocking of the converter station, the overvoltage of the DC bus and the decay time of the overcurrent is analyzed.
