Broadcasters now appear to be fully comfortable with their precious real time video data being segmented and sent in ATM packets, because of its connection-oriented transport and guaranteed QoS. IP has been increasingly seen as the saviour for all network transport requirements of applications in the data world, but has never provided the necessary assurance for critical real time services. Then along comes MPLS, with the promise of potentially the best of both worlds - and a generic solution that might embrace all transport requirements. (7 pages)
