This paper discusses the development of the microphone, the first suggestion for which was by Bourseul in 1854 with a flexible disc which, with vibration, alternately makes and breaks a contact. The microphone of Bell's telephone is discussed followed by the development of the carbon microphone which remained in use until the 1970s. The development of magnetic transducers, omnidirectional moving-coil microphones, ribbon microphones, directional moving-coil microphones, capacitor microphones, piezoelectric microphones and highly-directional microphones is also discussed. Techniques for recording directional information, microphones for noisy environments, public address use of microphones, boundary-layer microphones, hearing aids, and measuring microphones are also discussed.
