London has been at risk from tidal flooding for centuries and that risk appears to be increasing each year. Analysis of tides in the Thames illustrates this trend by showing the increasing high tides at London Bridge since the eighteenth century. It has been shown that this adverse change is due in part to a mean rise in sea level (due to climate affects) and a downward tilt of the South East of England accompanied by an increase in tidal amplitude. These factors together contribute to a rise of high water levels at London Bridge of about 750 mm per century measured since detailed levelling started early in the 18th Century. This condition alone does not present a difficult problem but when compounded with the phenomenon of a surge, a very significant hazard exists. (16 pages)
