The name of Elliott is probably best known through Elliott Automation, the large group taken over by English Electric in 1965 and in turn by GEC in 1966. Earlier, Elliott Brothers (London) Ltd. were well known as electrical engineers and makers of precision electrical instruments. The Company's origins are however in the much older profession of mathematical instrument-making, whilst its later activities included telegraphy, marine instruments, gunnery controls, aviation instruments and industrial controls. Originally a family concern, the Company was later led and influenced by some outstanding personalities. (9 pages)
