This paper summarises the results of an archaeological study of the electric power generating industry, undertaken by the author on behalf of English Heritage for its Monuments Protection Programme. The broad aim was to identify and assess sites of 'national importance' in an archaeological/historical context, the intention being for English Heritage to use this data in formulating policy on statutory protection for monuments of the industry (predominantly through scheduling and listing).
