The worksheet-and-test approach has proved a useful tool in improving students' basic algebra. It encourages continued practice. Advantages have been: relatively low staffing time required after initial setup; can easily be tailored to provide support for other modules; self-timed approach is popular with students; and the worksheets are useful revision material for other students. The main problem has been the necessity to bar students who already have A-level mathematics from taking the module as an easy option. (5 pages)
