This paper compares the cost of a typical VSAT network using existing transponder technology to the same network implemented using TRW's Gen Star processing payload technology. Unlike proposed future applications for which no quantitative data exists, the properties of existing VSAT networks are well known and can be easily evaluated. The results demonstrate that processing payloads represent a superior solution for both today's VSAT networks and for the more sophisticated applications and network topologies inevitable in the future.
