The TETRA standard supports communication of simultaneous voice and data. This brings significant benefits to both public safety and business users in that it enables a range of multimedia applications to be integrated with voice services. This paper presents an overview of multimedia applications which could be supported by TETRA systems, based on interviews with potential users. Some of the key technical and user issues associated with these applications are discussed. The paper goes on to describe Motorola's experimental multimedia over Dimetra transmission system, Solar, and discusses user evaluation of the system. Following this, alternative configurations and solutions for communication of multimedia information via Dimetra are covered, including wireless to fixed solutions and multicasting by use of H.323. Finally, the paper concludes with comments about possible future multimedia developments as applied to Dimetra. (6 pages)
