Implementing change in manufacturing companies has never been easy. Once the opportunity for change has been identified, change facilitators need to understand the obstacles that stand in the way of effective change in order to overcome them. Based on the experience gained through the implementation of change in a commercial aircraft wing manufacturer, the paper examines the attributes of people, process and product that can be measured and hence addressed to ensure a successful transition. Process and product provide the vehicle for change whereas people provide the mechanism for change. The author concludes that unless change facilitators can identify, measure and share what is considered to be of value between the mechanisms of change and the vehicles of change, then true relationships that stimulate step change can never exist.
