Much attention has been paid on energy efficiency of routing protocols in wireless ad hoc networks. Since transmission or receiving of data packets and control packets will drain the energy which is powered by the batteries, designing energy efficient communication techniques is one of the most important challenges for wireless ad hoc networks. In this paper, we design an optimizing routing protocol ORE for enhancing energy efficiency with network coding in wireless ad hoc networks based on PEER protocol proposed in [1]. We incorporate the path accumulating characteristic and network coding technique to improve PEER protocol with the aim of achieving energy efficiency as much as possible. The results of simulation in both static scenarios and mobile scenarios show that ORE achieves better performance than the existing protocols.
