A number of virtual spaces have been created, during the last few years, by academic and research institutions, technology transfer organisations and specialised consulting companies in order to facilitate the dissemination and commercial exploitation of R&D results and research-based products and services. These spaces consist of online databases, innovation tools and offer professional services assisting companies to adopt new technologies and develop innovations. The first part of the paper looks at the cooperation between industry and academia, defining models of technology transfer and practices linking physical and digital dissemination of R&D and innovation. The second part examines a series of such virtual spaces, illustrating the typology of online tools for technology transfer and innovation. The Digital Research Centre for Cooperative Innovation, a new infrastructure of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, is examined in detail. The final part of the paper presents the value added by virtual spaces for the dissemination and exploitation of R&D. (10 pages)
