In this paper, the energy efficiency of an architectural facade lighting system in a public facility is explored. The combined use of high flux LED luminaire and high intensity xenon discharge lamp for building facade lighting is introduced and energy efficiency is compared with the traditional high intensity discharge lighting (HID) system . With the new lighting control system, different lighting scenes and effects are achieved by networking all luminaires in the same building through a network in DMX protocol. Different DMX networks of different buildings can also be connected via the intranet such that a gigantic scene can be formed by grouping individual buildings in a city. Data on energy consumption and operation cost of the two systems were collected and analyzed in order to find the most energy efficient operation mode of operation.
