We show the performance of packet data transmission on the UMTS dedicated channel (DCH). For that purpose, a framework of rate adaptation procedures has been developed. It significantly improves the performance in terms of decreased outage and lower transmission delay compared to simple algorithms which do not have the possibility of changing the rate. Furthermore, we show how the impact on the TCP/IP performance can be kept low.
