The paper discusses techniques for transmitting packets on the WCDMA uplink air interface using the DCH (dedicated channel) in UTRA FDD. The developed algorithms efficiently match the transmission rate to the source data rate using a variable spreading code and multiple codes (multicode) for parallel transmission. The performance of a user equipment (UE) assisted algorithm and a base station (BS) assisted algorithm is compared for data and video transmissions. An OPNET model is used to simulate the performance of both the proposed methods.
