A comprehensive study has been carried out involving both modelling and experimental measurements of the influence of protonospheric plasma on GPS signals received at European stations. It has been demonstrated that the asymmetry of the protonosphere can result in errors in the estimation of the total electron content (TEC) using GPS transmissions. Furthermore, caution must be exercised in the use of thin-shell ionospheric models to correct for propagation effects on GPS systems.
