The computing industry has embraced the concepts of middleware and application programming interfaces, using them successfully to promote open interfaces and code re-use in the development of software systems. This paper explores the application of these ideas to the telecommunications industry and uses the development of a messaging application programming interface to illustrate the advantages of such an approach in an increasingly competitive and innovative environment.
