This paper will describe a media data architecture suited to disk-based video production systems including stand-alone workstations and workstations intended for client-server and shared storage production systems. Topics to be addressed include: the basic media architecture, the role of the media metadata, how compositions are “AutoConformed^TM on-the-fly” during playback, the role of the media database, and how this data architecture affects media storage and networking. The paper will explain how this media data architecture provides unique flexibility for storage, interchange, sharing, networking, archiving, multi-purposing, and re-purposing. There will also be discussion of how this technological approach leverages continuing rapid development and the resources available in the computer and information systems industry. The paper will also discuss how and why this media data architecture is applicable across a range of technologies including client-server and shared storage system architectures and that this approach is independent of operating systems and hardware platforms.
