This paper presents the rationale for improvement of the present INTELSAT (SS)TDMA system, and describes the current INTELSAT program to achieve this goal. The role of TDMA in the INTELSAT system and the performance record and customer benefits are described. Two objectives of this program are to make low cost TDMA terminal equipment available to INTELSAT TDMA system customers, and to enhance the traffic carrying flexibility of the system.
