The post production industry is going through one of its periodic phases of rapid change, with many new possibilities on offer. Programmes need to be made with post production technology that delivers the level of performance for the required appropriate terms of speed, It seems prudent that both programme makers and manufacturers should look for technology combinations that deliver what they want today and at the same time offer an evolutionary path to the future technologies. The paper proposes a pragmatic strategy, "hybrid editing," which addresses this need by the use of tape and disc in a mixed hardware and software environment. This is not an approach limited to a single manufacturer. A number of hybrid systems from a variety of manufacturers exist and as the benefits of a hybrid strategy become apparent, more systems are to be expected.
