This paper has brought together analysis of main suspension disturbance sources, modelling of active and passive quarter car systems, and control (at a single wheel station) of both an active model and a full-scale hydraulic test rig. Model validation results have been presented which show a high degree of correlation between the dynamic model and rig fitted with a passive strut. Results indicate the inclusion of strut stiction and tyre damping models may enhance the degree of match still further. Closed loop experimental rig results qualitatively match those of the simulation. However, the prototype strut suffers from a high level of static friction, and work has not progressed to the ideal point where a controller design based on the dynamic model can directly transcribed and implemented on the rig.
