This paper aims at the characterisation of a highly sustainable barrier made of circular section timber of low industrial processing, for electromagnetic shielding purposes. The considerable amount of electromagnetic radiation discharged on the ecosystem as consequence of the increasing number of mobile devices and telecommunications services, enforce electromagnetic shielding along with the existing acoustic shielding. Preferably, electromagnetic and acoustic shielding barriers should be made of low cost, environment friedly and ecologic materials. To this extent, studies on the feasability of using wooden poles to deploy such barriers are presented in this paper. The parametrisation of wooden poles moisture content (MC), bending, surface roughness and distance between poles, is analysed in order to assess the optimal configuration for electromagnetic shielding (or transparency) capabilities of the barrier, in the frequency range of 0.7 to 5.9 GHz. Simulation results indicade that, manipulating the barrier structure (e.g. pole inter distance) will change the electromagnetic behaviour of the barrier and, thus, its frequency selective shielding characteristics.
