We study the electromagnetic field representations with a focus on optical communications. Well known representations are analyzed and new ones are presented. We investigate the multi-dimensional nature of the electromagnetic field and some representations of this phenomenon and study them as rotations in the 4dimensional space. This approach allows us to highlight the relationships between different representations and to better understand the limits in exploiting them for communication purposes.
