Distributions of point one-minute rain rates are fundamental for modelling rain attenuation on terrestrial and earth-space communication links. The current Recommendation of the International Telecommunication Union - Radiocommunication Sector, ITU-R P.837-6 provides these distributions globally, derived from Numerical Weather Products, but is widely considered inaccurate in the tropics. This paper presents a rain distribution model for the tropics derived from Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission satellite data. Downscaling from TRMM distributions to one-minute distributions is performed by fitting to a subset of data within the database of the ITU-R Study Group 3, DBSG3. The results are verified against the remaining DBSG3 data using the Rec ITU-R P.311 Goodness of Fit measure.
