Large parts of the legacy Scottish Power Transmission (SPT) networks have reached their thermal limits in terms of accommodating any further generation and still a significant amount of new embedded generation is being contracted for connection across the Scottish Power Transmission and Distribution networks (SPT and SPD). To accommodate further generation substantial network reinforcements and network expansion is required. Network changes on this scale are complex and can take a number of years to complete. In order to provide an earlier connection date for the generators Load Management Schemes (LMS) have been designed. The paper will describe LMS that monitor entire sections of the SP Transmission system using standard protection hardware and encompass up to 48 measurement points at 16 geographically dispersed sites. This paper will describe the commercial drivers behind the need for the LMS, the design philosophy that was chosen and the architecture of the LMS.
