Asset replacement and new connections on the electricity transmission system require Overhead Line (OHL) reconfiguration and/or re-conductoring. System reconfiguration and new generation connections result in changes to system fault levels which warrant protection setting review. The paper describes the approach adopted by National Grid to determine the requirement for protection setting re-calculation due to changes to OHL impedance and fault levels.
