To fully utilize wireless channel, it is important to maximize the saturation throughput of vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) broadcasting protocol. The saturation throughput of single-hop broadcasting protocol is related to contention window and contending nodes in the network. We propose a discrete Markova analytic model for performance evaluation of the single-hop broadcasting protocol under the saturation condition which can be used for VANETs in highways, and we also analyze the relationship between the number of vehicle nodes and the contention window value. The analysis results show that for a given number of nodes in transmission range, there exists an optimum contention window for which the broadcast throughput is maximized. We find that suitable contention window value can optimize the system throughput of broadcasting protocol in VANETs. The simulation results show that the proposed analytic model and optimized contention window value can enhance the system throughput.
