Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage (SMES) systems have found a number of applications in power systems. The heart of the SMES system is the large superconducting coil. This is represent ed as a simple inductor for dynamic operation, but for transient analysis a more detailed model is used to predict its behaviour. This paper presents the comparison of the HVDC system performance with a detailed model and a simple model of SMES coil, for various transient conditions. These studies are carried out through PSCAD/ EMTDC environment.
