Handling qualities
We introduce in simple terms what we mean by handling qualities, how we specify them, and how we achieve them. They are those characteristics of the dynamic behaviour of the aircraft that allow precise control with low pilot workload. Then we introduce pilot-induced oscillations (PIO) because they are one of the more serious consequences of failure to design for good handling qualities, and because current PIO studies offer an interesting example of state-of-the-art research in handling qualities. A major objective of flight control system design is to bestow good handling (or flying) qualities on the aircraft. Metrics for handling qualities are considered.
