Carmakers now routinely use software simulation to test drive concepts long before they are mocked up in hardware. Even when a new piece of hardware, such as an engine is ready to be tested, a computer simulation may pretend to be the rest of the car. This makes testing more efficient and safer. It also allows new concepts to be tried out at an earlier stage to gauge their effectiveness. It underlines how change is not just about finding a direct more eco-friendly alternative to an existing fuel or component.
