Liquid-crystal displays based on an induced twist in a nematic liquid often have a patched appearance when viewed at nonnormal incidence. This fault has previously been unexplained. It is shown by experiment that the patches reveal regions of reverse twist relative to that in neighbouring areas.

An application of acoustic surface waves for image processing is reported. The information compression of videophone signals takes advantage of the so-called Hadamard transformation. Acoustic-surface-wave tapped delay lines are efficient for the achievement of such a transform in a low-cost real-time device. The results of initial experiments are reported.

Simulations of n+–n–n+ GaAs devices show three régimes where the operating frequency substantially exceeds the normal transit frequency. The efficiency/frequency characteristics and the effects of length and carrier density differ from predictions for an idealised I.s.a. mode.

A differential circuit configuration is described that suppresses unwanted clock-frequency spectral energy at the output of a charge-transfer device. The differential mode of operation also eliminates the d.c. offset voltage that is characteristic of these devices. Experimental results are presented.

A Fourier-transform integral can be transformed into an integral of a periodic function over a finite interval. This integral can be calculated efficiently by the trapezium rule, while the periodic function, which is expressed as an infinite series, can be evaluated using Euler's transformation. The authors report the fabrication of a GaAs Gunn-effect structure with three Au–Ge–Ni ohmic contacts. The ‘multistrip perturbation theory’ of the coupler has been extended to the multistrip amplifier. A study of the acoustoelectric gain shows that, if the number of strips per wavelength is very large, the gain becomes that predicted by Adler, but the number of strips per wavelength required to reach this condition increases drastically with the conductivity of the semiconductor; it also shows that the width of the strips on the semiconductor should be as large a fraction as possible of their period, and that, if the conductivity of the semiconductor is low and the number of strips per wavelength is small, gain can be obtained from electrons drifting at a velocity less than the sound velocity in the opposite direction to the surface wave, and, in some cases, even in the same direction. - Author(s): C. A space-harmonic perturbation theory is presented for the multistrip coupler which does not require any adjustment parameters and which gives the dispersion relations separately for the symmetric and for the antisymmetric modes. The agreement with experimental results for different widths and spacings of the strips is very good when the number of strips per wavelength is greater than two, but is not as good for smaller values, because the effects of the reflected wave and of the radiated bulk waves have been neglected. - Author(s): R.C. Whip or monopole antennas less than a quarter wavelength long can be significantly improved through series inductive loading in the antenna wire, provided that the coil losses are less than the improved radiation resistance. However, if the antenna is too short or the coil too lossy, the performance may degrade instead of improve. The combination of antenna length, radius, and coil Q factor for which the efficiency is 50% is an important design guide. This transition point varies with Q1/3 and even more slowly with length/radius ratio. For Q = 300, the transition point occurs for monopole lengths between 0.05 and 0.07 wavelengths. - Author(s): A.
